description

“Les Chevaliers Cathares” is a monumental cement sculpture by painter and sculptor Jacques Tissinier. The work was installed in 1980 on the edge of the Deux Mers motorway in Narbonne (at the Pech Loubat service area on the A10). It consists of three cement “knights”, each 13 metres high, evoking Cathar memories. It was purchased in 1982 by Autoroutes du Sud de la France for 190,000 francs. A. Champagne and art historian Thomas Schlesser say that it is probably “the only existing song about motorway art”, aimed at a “pathetic spectacle of three vague bunkers in white cement and sandblasted quartz aggregate” that “borders on the ridiculous”. The sculpture is the direct inspiration for Francis Cabrel's song “Les Chevaliers cathares”, in which he refers to them as “crying softly at the edge of the motorway” and ironically suspects that the designer of the plans is “from above the Loire”.
